WHAT'S HOT IN February:
Vancouver

Calgary
This month you have your pick of great concert acts, starting with the Barenaked Ladies at the Saddledome Feb 8, Emmylou Harris Feb 11, Chantel Kreviazuk Feb 14 and Colin James Feb 23 at the Jubilee, and Van Morrison Feb 27 at the Saddledome. Also check out our one-on-one interview with Barenaked Ladies vocalist Ed Robertson.
Canadian Rockies
Enjoy Canmore Winterfest, Feb 16 to 25. Marquee events include ice carving, entertainment and 'Have a Heart' fundraising auction (Feb 17), Trapper's Ball with 'The Shooting of Dan McGrew' performance (Feb 24), and 'Noche Flamenca' flamenco evening (Feb 24). For information call Tourism Canmore, 1-866-226-6673.
Toronto
The Phantom of the Opera returns after a 10-year run that began in 1989, making it the city's longest-running musical. Love, betrayal, revenge and murder are at the core of this story of a deformed man who haunts the Paris Opera and falls in love with chorus girl Christine. On at Princess of Wales Theatre.
Edmonton
Have a bit of fun with Canada's favourite pastime with a play full of local flavours: Hockey Mom, Hockey Dad. This quirky comedy on skates features Donna and Teddy, two single parents who meet and fall in love behind the zamboni during their sons' hockey games. On from Feb 15 to Mar 4 at the Roxy Theatre.
Victoria
Starting with Fatal Attraction, an exhibition on animal mating rituals at the B.C. Museum, and moving on to year-round golfing adventures, check out Victoria's feature guide: 10 Tips for Winter Touring.
Halifax
Check out Dine Out Nova Scotia week, Feb 19 to 28, with various restaurants around the province offering special prix fixe menus to showcase some of their finest offerings. Participating Halifax restaurants include O'Carroll's on Upper Water Street, Dofsky's Grill on Brunswick Street and Onyx on Spring Garden Road.
Ottawa
Enjoy the Winterlude festival, on till Feb 18. The main draw is the Rideau Canal Skateway—at 7.8 km long, it's the world's largest skating rink. There's events all over the city, from workshops for kids to concerts on the main stage, ice sculptures at Confederation Park and sled runs at Jacques Cartier Park.

The WHERE List:
FONDUE DINING
What could be better on a chilly February day than a warm, soothing and romantic fondue dinner? Here's some choice fondue hot spots as selected by WHERE's regional editors.
Toronto
On a cold day, a sweet treat to end a meal is best when it's warmed. The Esplanade Bier Market (58 The Esplanade, 416-862-7575) offers a decadent option: Belgian chocolate fondue for two served with fresh fruit and pastries ($14).
Vancouver
If you want fondue, you can always count on the The William Tell Restaurant (765 Beatty St.; 604-688-3504). But on the West Coast we like to do things a little bit differently, so here hot pot is the new fondue. En route from downtown to the airport, Landmark Hot Pot House (4023 Cambie St.; 604-872-2868) is a welcoming Cantonese room where "cook your own" action centres around steaming table-top hot pots, yin-and-yang servings of gently spicy satay soup beside clear chicken-based broth. In goes everything from delicious thin-sliced fatty beef to tofu puffs, oysters and prawn fish balls.
Canadian Rockies
Every mountain ski town needs a great fondue restaurant like Banff's Grizzly House Restaurant. Diners cook their meal in boiling oil or atop hot rocks, and can order exotic ingredients such as elk, shark and rattlesnake.
Calgary
For two of the city's best fondue experiences, check out Barclay's and Laurier Lounge. Barclay's in the Sheraton Eau Claire offers a divine neufchâtel cheese fondue with gruyere and emmental melted together with white wine. Laurier Lounge is a cozy little romantic spot where the "Fondue Experience" starts with a Swiss cheese fondue, a 30-day aged beef main course fondue and finishes with chocolate and seasonal fruit.
