Dear Subscriber
This month we tell you where you can find the country's hottest dining and entertainment festivals, antique shows and where you can snowboard in the summer. We also give you the latest updates on travelling with your pet, national online contests, plus our annual editors' picks for Canada's Top 10 New Summer Attractions.
WHAT'S HOT IN JULY:
Toronto
Savour the city's finest fare without breaking the bank, at Summerlicious, a citywide dining event running July 6 to 22. Pay $15 to $35 for a three-course lunch or dinner at the 130 restaurants participating this year. The Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival features 40 new lanterns, some up to five storeys tall. Opening July 19, they depict three influential dynasties from Chinese history, plus nightly entertainment and a Chinese marketplace add to the festive feel.
Edmonton
As the region's biggest annual event, Capital EX, a long running, recently revamped fair, attracts around 800,000 people over its 10-day run. This year it takes place July 19 to 28. It's a good chance to check out Edmonton's cultural and pop culture scene with a wide choice of entertainment, midway thrills and games and shopping.
Muskoka
The Algonquin opens its doors July 4 to 22 to the Huntsville Festival of the Arts, which boasts local and international performers, including Lighthouse (July 18) and Hawksley Workman (July 21). Meanwhile, you can get your antique fix at the Antique & Classic Boat Show July 7 with more than 100 boats, and the 25th annual Muskoka Antique Show July 27 to 29.
Winnipeg
Jail cells once stood near Old Market Square in the late 1800s. Now the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, July 18 to 29, is bringing unlawful behaviour back to the Exchange District with this year's 20 Years to Life theme, inspired by its 20th anniversary. The second largest fringe festival in North America, this multi-venue event attracts talented local, national and international troupes.
Canadian Rockies
The Banff Centre's Summer Arts Festival kicks into high gear in July. Get a sampling with their Taste of the Festival Weekend July 6 to 8 with a Friday BBQ, mountain film screenings, late-night cabarets, gala concert and more. Then from July 25 to 28 enjoy 60 Years of Dance in Banff where you can celebrate The Banff Centre's legacy with live performances, historic videos and encounters with dance legends.
Vancouver
The beach is so passé. When it's sweltering hot, grab the snowboard and head to Blackcomb Mountain. Snowbunnies love to work on their summer tans on the Blackcomb Glacier (to July 29). If you're really lucky, you'll achieve the mythical Vancouver experience: snowboard, golf and sail all on the same day.
Calgary
The Calgary Stampede, reputed as the "greatest outdoor show on Earth," hosts live performances, midway, rodeos, chuckwagon races and exhibitions. A must-see is the 3-hour parade downtown on July 6. To ensure you don't miss a thing, check out our 10-days feature where we give you a Stampede itinerary, or Stampede Nights for a Stampede nightlife rundown.
Victoria
See world-class sports action this July. Continuing at Royal Athletic Park July 7 and 11 is the 2007 FIFA U20 World Cup, with soccer games featuring teams such as Uruguay, Zambia, Scotland and Costa Rica. Next up, from July 26 to 29, is the 2007 BMX Worlds, when some of the world's best cyclists compete for top honours.
Halifax
This summer, from July 12 to 16, the Halifax waterfront hosts Tall Ships Festival Nova Scotia 2007, North America's largest gathering of sailing ships. It's your chance to see (and visit) more than 60 tall ships hailing from Canada, the U.S., Britain, Germany, India and the Netherlands. The main event is sure to be the Parade of Sail on July 16, when you can watch the ships depart under full sail.
