Dear Subscriber
This month: It's a full plate as we reveal all the details for our picks of the Best New Restaurants of 2005 and move forward with great concerts, theatre events and dining festivals to launch 2006. Also, we unravel the changing landscape of inflight meals and entertainment.
What's Hot in January:
Winnipeg
The city's hottest restaurant event, Dine Out Winnipeg runs Jan 31 to Feb 9. This popular promotion features over two dozen of the city's top restaurants, all offering set price three-course menus. Advance reservations begin Jan 13.
Edmonton
Organized by the Natural History Museum in London, England and BBC Wildlife Magazine, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition displays some of the best wildlife photography in the world, Jan 28 to Apr 23, at the Royal Alberta Museum.
Canadian Rockies
Watch as teams carve massive blocks of ice into glittering crystalline sculptures during the Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, Jan 27 to 29. If you can't catch the carving, admire the art until it melts away in a few months.
Toronto
A highlight of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's 2006 season is the Mozart: A Life in Letters concert, Jan 26 and 27. Snippets from the life and letters of the iconic composer are presented alongside a selection of his arias and operas.
Calgary
What do Inuit throat singing, comedic dance theatre, teen angst poetry, and indie rock have in common? These are just a sample of the acts that make up this year's One Yellow Rabbit High Performance Rodeo, Jan 3 to 29.
New York
Winter Restaurant Weeks: This annual foodie windfall, Jan 23 through 27 and Jan 30 through Feb 3, features over 100 of the city's greatest restaurants offering prix fixe lunches for $24.07 and dinners for $35. Visit www.nycvisit.com for a list of participating restaurants.
Halifax
It's a bug's life at the Museum of Natural History on Summer Street, as the Bug World exhibit opens January 10. Both kids and adults will marvel at Kokoro's giant robotic insects: see giant desert locusts, two fighting rhinoceros beetles the size of a car—and don't miss the live insects in the Bug Zoo, either.
Vancouver
If you found Christmas cultural clichés hard to swallow, take in more invigorating brain food at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, which pushes buttons and boundaries in theatre and music, Jan 10 to Feb 4.
